New Procedure Claims To Be Gentler Liposuction 2009-10-01 10:20:08 | Source A new procedure claims to be a cheaper, kinder and gentler liposuction. It is called lipo selection and the claim is that it liquefies the fat to make it easier to remove, and targets the fat cells you want gone. Salllian Diodati had trouble losing weight. "I tried exercise. I joined a gym. I did everything, but my belly didn't go anywhere," Diodati said. A few months ago, Diodati underwent a new procedure known as lipo selection. Patients are given a sedative, but stay awake during the procedure, which can be described as a kinder, gentler liposuction. "It's selective ultrasound. The probes that we use are microcanules. They're actually smaller, almost the size of a pencil and at the end it vibrates," physician's assistant Paul Mallari said. The ultrasound helps liquefy the fat. "We liquefy it and basically it's like taking lard. You liquefy it like water and we take a little canule, like a straw, and we actually remove the fat that way. It doesn't damage skin, it doesn't damage blood vessels, it doesn't damage nerves, it doesn't damage collagen, which all are very important in the healing process," Mallari said. Since the entire area to be treated is completely numbed, the patient is awake and feeling. NBC 10 News Healthwatch spoke with Pennsylvania Hospital plastic surgeon Dr. Louis Bucky, who said this is not a new procedure, and he feels results are not any different than small-canule non-ultrasound liposuction.
