New Type Of Liposuction Has Complications & Rewards 2009-09-09 08:45:26 | Source A new type of liposuction can help you lose up to 20 pounds in a week but it can also put you at risk for some serious complications. Cindy Collier said she's tried just about everything to lose weight. So recently, Cindy chose to have Dr. Chris Gordon, a plastic surgeon, perform ultrasonic liposuction. It's a surgical procedure where a vibrating probe placed under the skin liquefies the fat so it can be easily sucked out of the body. Cindy admits, that first week after surgery was pretty tough. She had pain and seroma, a dramatic complication following her surgery. Gordon said seroma, the result of a persistent collection of fluid from an injury under the skin, is a common complication of this type of surgery. Gordon said, "Liposuction looks like a small operation, but really there are tiny holes in the skin, and a great big wound underneath the skin, so there's a lot of tissue that can weep we ended up putting a small drain under her neck and letting that drain for a good couple of weeks until that finally came down." Still, three months later, she's had some dramatic results--20 pounds gone in one week. Cindy says even with the complication she would do it all again. This type of liposuction costs $3,000 to $5,000 slightly more than traditional liposuction. It is not covered by most medical insurance plans.
